Medical Marijuana Q&A

What is medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana involves using marijuana to manage medical conditions. The marijuana plant contains cannabinoids, which are chemicals that interact with your body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS is a cell-signaling system that regulates many body functions, including mood, memory, sleep, appetite, and pain, to help maintain homeostasis. This system is made of endocannabinoids (chemicals) and receptors (messengers).

The cannabinoids in medical marijuana stimulate the ECS receptors to get the desired results. Though researchers are still learning about the cannabinoids in marijuana, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) interacts with your ECS to reduce pain, boost appetite, and improve your general sense of well-being.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) are other chemicals in marijuana that interact with your ECS. But these cannabinoids don’t have the same psychoactive effects as THC.

Residents of the state of Florida can get a Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card after meeting with a qualifying medical professional who diagnoses them with a qualifying condition and enters their information into the registry.

Dynamic Health & Wellness Center offers this service.

What are qualifying conditions for medical marijuana?

Many chronic health conditions benefit from medical marijuana. Qualifying conditions for use of medical marijuana in the state of Florida include:

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Crohn’s disease
